General Metasurface Synthesis Based on Susceptibility Tensors

Abstract: Abstract-A general method, based on susceptibility tensors, is proposed for the synthesis of metasurfaces transforming arbitrary incident waves into arbitrary reflected and transmitted waves. The proposed method exhibits two advantages: 1) it is inherently vectorial, and therefore better suited for full vectorial (beyond paraxial) electromagnetic problems, 2) it provides closedform solutions, and is therefore extremely fast. Incidentally, the method reveals that a metasurface is fundamentally capable to transf… Show more

“…Finally, since the refractive indices of p-GaN and n-GaN are very close to that of pure GaN, they can be merged in a single one with the index of pure GaN. As a result of all these simplifications, the structure in , synthesized for arbitrary incident, reflected and transmitted fields [18]. Fig.…”

“…Metasurfaces are spatial arrays made of subwavelengthly spaced scattering particles providing unprecedented flexibility in controlling electromagnetic wavefronts in space, time, or both space and time [38][39][40][41][42]. Recently, there has been a great interest in all-dielectric metasurfaces due to their low-loss characteristics and fabrication simplicity, as compared to their plasmonic implementations.…”

“…This method, as detailed in [11], is thus based on solving equations (8) for the components of the susceptibility tensors with relations (10). Equations (8a) and (8b) involve the derivatives of the normal components of the polarization densities and yield a set of coupled inhomogeneous partial differential equations.…”

“…So far, only two approaches have been introduced to formally accomplish this transformation, the first is based on momentum transformation [10], and the second is based on susceptibility tensor extraction [11]. In this paper, we discuss these two exact approaches to synthesize the metasurface given the incident and the scattered fields.…”
