General Electric GEVO Engine for Tier 2 Locomotive Application

Abstract: EPA Tier 2 locomotive exhaust emission levels for U.S. locomotives present significant challenges in the reduction of NOx and particulate emissions compared to Tier 0 and 1 levels. Further tuning of legacy engines would have resulted in large losses in fuel economy to achieve NOx levels and provide for deterioration of PM, HC and smoke. For these reasons, GE Transportation Systems responded to the Tier 2 requirements with a new engine that will meet the emissions levels with margin against deterioration and wi… Show more

“…All of the strategies outlined above were, in fact, used on line-haul locomotives in order to comply with both Tier 1 and Tier 2 standards (Dillen and Gallagher, 2002;Flynn, Hupperich, Napierkowski, & Reichert, 2003). In addition, all Tier 1 units used 4-pass aftercooling and changes were made to the cylinder liner and piston rings to reduce lubricating oil consumption (EF&EE expert opinion).…”

“…Estimate based on EF&EE discussion with a genset switcher company. 17Figure 2ofFlynn et al (2003), for example, shows the general relation between NOx and fuel economy, but omits the units from the fuel-economy axis.…”
