General Conceptual Framework of Future Wearables in Healthcare: Unified, Unique, Ubiquitous, and Unobtrusive (U4) for Customized Quantified Output

Abstract: We concentrate on the importance and future conceptual development of wearable devices as the major means of personalized healthcare. We discuss and address the role of wearables in the new era of healthcare in proactive medicine. This work addresses the behavioral, environmental, physiological, and psychological parameters as the most effective domains in personalized healthcare, and the wearables are categorized according to the range of measurements. The importance of multi-parameter, multi-domain monitorin… Show more

“…This supports the statement that our healthcare systems currently transits from treatment after diagnosis towards prediction, prevention, and proactive personalized healthcare [ 107 ]. Enhancing the penetration rate of wearables in real studies requires user and physician satisfactions [ 22 ]. Thus, as a matter of fact, improving continuous monitoring is impacted by reducing the power consumption, which is consequently function of mode of data transmission.…”

“…Hence, the fourth group of wearables (G4) further demands a customized and quantified output with respect to disease and user’s health status. This personalization enables a meaningful contribution to the decision-making of physicians [ 22 ]. Following this approach, we propose simultaneous monitoring of all four influencing domains, followed by a two-layer filter and computations of parameters’ interactions ( Figure 10 ).…”

“…Accordingly, ODH and A&EI shake hands by looking from two different but convergent viewpoints to the complex disruptive events : a ODH looks at a "population to individual" funnel for the global prevention, response, recovery, and mitigation of health and environment-related events ; b A&EI looks at the disruptive events from the casualty perspective by providing a short-, mid-, and long-term follow-up to each case by identifying in a unique and specific way via ISAN anywhere, anytime, and for anyone or anything (A4) [46]. A&EI uses a complementary funnel to ODH, looking from "individual to population".…”
