Gene-Z: a device for point of care genetic testing using a smartphone

Abstract: By 2012, point of care (POC) testing will constitute roughly one third of the $59 billion in vitro diagnostics market. The ability to carry out multiplexed genetic testing and wireless connectivity are emerging as key attributes of future POC devices. In this study, an inexpensive, user-friendly and compact device (termed Gene-Z) is presented for rapid quantitative detection of multiple genetic markers with high sensitivity and specificity. Using a disposable valve-less polymer microfluidic chip containing fou… Show more

“…Similarly, there are genomic markers that efficaciously track the lack of response to or the optimal dosing of commonly used drugs, such as clopidogrel, steroid inhalers, warfarin, and pegylated interferon (11 ). Multiple POC platforms are available for rapid genotyping (in Ͻ30 min).…”

“…Inside the Gene-Z device, an array of 64 light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a bundle of optical fibers, and a single photodiode were used to measure fluorescence in real time (28). An iPod Touch (gen 5) was used to control the reaction temper-ature and time, start the device, stream data via Bluetooth connectivity, and sort, plot, store, and transmit results.…”

“…The bottles were also amended with ethanol (ϳ44.0 mg/liter) each week if residual cDCE and VC were observed. An aliquot (1.0 ml) of culture fluid was removed on days 0, 7,14,21,28,35,38,41, and 44 for DNA extraction. DNA was isolated from 100-l aliquots using the Mo Bio DNA isolation kit, per the manufacturer's protocol (Mo Bio Laboratories, Inc., Carlsbad, CA).…”

“…In this case, a three-dimensional printed centrifugal microfluidics, mounted on a microcentrifuge was designed for ELISA immunosorbent assay with smartphone-based measurements. Also microfluidic chip, but with four arrays of 15 reaction wells was developed for carrying out a smartphone-based genetic testing, employing fluorescent DNA binding dye [14].…”
