Gene Functional Trade-Offs and the Evolution of Pleiotropy

Abstract: Pleiotropy is the property of genes affecting multiple functions or characters of an organism. Genes vary widely in their degree of pleiotropy, but this variation is often considered a by-product of their evolutionary history. We present a functional theory of how pleiotropy may itself evolve. We consider genes that contribute to two functions, where contributing more to one function detracts from allocation to the second function. We show that whether genes become pleiotropic or specialize on a single functio… Show more

“…Nevertheless, these two functions suggest the possibility of pleiotropy, in which optimal functionality for both transport and transcription functions cannot be accommodated within a single protein-coding gene (Guillaume and Otto 2012), reducing the adaptive capacity of the NPC (Orr 2000). Gene duplication has been proposed as one mechanism that can relieve the deleterious effects of such antagonistic pleiotropy of functions under certain conditions (Guillaume and Otto 2012).…”

“…First the doctor has to disclose the "basis on which the proposed treatment or the alternative possible treatments have been chosen," and second the patient should be able to ask questions about the physician's proposed treatment and reasoning to the patient's approval and satisfaction. 100 Also it has been argued that some procedures require stronger, specific consent than others, because the treatment or procedure is more risky and serious. The difference in consent of a low risk versus high risk procedure is important to discuss in relation to the distinguishing characteristics of PGT.…”

“…104 Many times the appropriate treatment option does not stick out at the beginning, and additional discussions need to take place before all the treatment options are realized and fully appreciated. 105 Also it is important to "ascertain how the client anticipates test results will affect his/her medical manage-ment and health behaviors." 106 Treatment options might be available, but sometimes patients might not want to participate in those treatments or prevention method.…”

“…In the future it would be interesting to investigate the physiological and evolutionary basis of these differences. For instance traits displaying more parallelism could have a simpler genetic basis or be under stronger selective pressures (Guillaume & Otto 2012;Wagner et al 2008;.…”

“…Due to this "cost of complexity" natural selection would favour genetic changes that minimize detrimental pleiotropic effects while maximizing adaptive phenotypic changes (Guillaume & Otto 2012;). Since the repertoire of such mutations is limited these alleles would be repeatedly recruited by natural selection, especially during the independent adaptation to similar conditions by closely related organisms ).…”
