Gene-environment interaction: The causes of high obesity incidence

Abstract: Urbanization has provided experimental settings for testing the interactive relationship between genetic background and changes in lifestyle and dietary patterns. The concept of gene-environment interaction was described by epidemic of obesity along with urbanization. Genome-wide association has identified several genes such as melanocortin-4 receptor that associates with environmental influences of obesity. Gene environment (GxE) interaction refers to modification by an environmental factor of the effect of a… Show more

“…Obesity-associated inflammation is closely linked to the development and progression of atherosclerosis and other serious health problems such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. [1] The biological processes that link adipose tissue inflammation to the development of atherosclerosis are not fully understood, namely in the context of diet-induced obesity.…”

“…Furthermore, the absence of childhood obesity and family history have reduced the risk of adulthood obesity and co-morbidity and reduced the risk of chronic diseases in the future. Genetics alone cannot explain obesity, gene-environment interaction can explain the high incidence of obesity [39]. Reports suggest that environmental factors are largely associated with the development of an obesity status and it also concludes that genetics only contributes 30% to the issue and 70% is attributed to the environment [40].…”
