Gene cluster analysis for the biosynthesis of elgicins, novel lantibiotics produced by paenibacillus elgii B69

Abstract: BackgroundThe recent increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics has promoted the exploration of novel antibacterial materials. As a result, many researchers are undertaking work to identify new lantibiotics because of their potent antimicrobial activities. The objective of this study was to provide details of a lantibiotic-like gene cluster in Paenibacillus elgii B69 and to produce the antibacterial substances coded by this gene cluster based on culture screening.ResultsAnalysis of the P. elgii B69 genome… Show more

“…Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene indicated that the isolate was closely related to P. elgii , P. koreensis , and P. tianmuensis (data not shown). This group of bacteria produces diverse antimicrobial agents, including lipopeptides [15,22,23], lantibiotics [24] and macrolide [14]. Interestingly, most extensively described lipopeptide antibiotics from this group of bacteria contain a high percentage of both Dab and a C6-C7 N-terminal fatty acyl chain [15,22].…”

“…The ethanol extract was loaded onto a polyamide resin column and washed with distilled water, followed by elution with 20, 40, 60, 80, and 95% (v/v) ethanol. Each fraction was collected and tested for antibacterial activity using the agar diffusion method [19]. The tests were repeated three times to ensure reliability.…”
