Using data from European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions, the study examines the causes of variation in the unexplained gender pay gap among 25 European countries and considers the effect of the legal environment on these. We employ the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to estimate the unexplained part of the gender pay gap. To assess the impact of the rule of law on unexplained gender wage differences, we apply a linear regression model, where the estimated unexplained gender pay gap is used as a dependent variable and selected rule of law indicators (specifically the Worldwide Governance Indicators Rule of Law and the Legal System & Property Rights Index) as explanatory variables. Controlling for other institutions affecting gender wage differences (specifically labour market regulation, work-family reconciliation policy and male wage dispersion), we suggest that differences in the quality of legislation and law enforcement across European countries may partly account for the variation in the unexplained gender pay gap. A very progressive improvement in rule of law indices (from the worst to the best among the 25 European countries examined) leads to a decrease in the unexplained gender pay gap by 4.5-5 percentage points.

Relationship of Gender Gap, Competitiveness and Sustainability of EconomyPosition of the Czech Republic in International ComparisonThe article examines the relationships between selected gender and economic indicators of chosen countries (OECD countries, EU countries, associate members of OECD and high-income countries) and evaluates situation of the Czech Republic in international comparison. Gender indicator values for the Czech Republic were compared both within the time period (years 2006-2014) and with summary statistics for the EU countries. Further, based on four subindexes of the global gender gap index (GGI), similarity of the Czech Republic and other countries in time comparison were expressed. Multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis were applied for graphical expression of relationships of the high-income and EU countries. Positive correlation of indicators refl ecting women participation in political and economic life was identifi ed in the OECD countries. Moreover, gender equality and the competitiveness, sustainability of economies and GDP per capita positively correlate in the group of these countries. Gender equality in the Czech Republic is very weak in an international comparison and demonstrates a deteriorating trend.

ÚvodRámec skúmania regionálnych aspektov príjmovej polarizácie v Slovenskej republike zohľadňuje zmeny vo vonkajšom vývoji relevantných štruktúr a systému Európskej únie, ako aj historické súvislosti vývoja politických a národohospodárskych zmien v slovenskej ekonomike po roku 1989.Z pohľadu súčasnej dlhovej krízy a jej postupnom pretavení do krízy spotreby a produkčných kapacít sú nastoľované viaceré otázky súvisiace s hľadaním spôso-bov oživenia hospodárskeho rastu, pričom názory medzi krajinami ako postupovať, sa rôznia. Niektoré krajiny sa postavili za to, aby sa "zošnurovaný kompakt výdavkov" eurozóny uvoľnil.Hrubé zadlženie domácností a fi nančných inštitúcií je v súčasnosti väčšie ako pred fi nančnou krízou. Dlhy štátov sa zásadne zvýšili v dôsledku sanácie bánk a poklesu daňových príjmov, vyplývajúceho z recesie. Európa zápasí s trendom starnutia populácie a súčasne s rastúcou mierou nezamestnanosti mladej generácie. Potreba práce klesá s aplikovaním nových technológií, podieľajúcich sa na raste konkurencieschopnosti európskych produkčných trhov.Krajinám EÚ sa nedarí podstatnou mierou znížiť dlhové zaťaženie domácností tak, ako sa to napr. podarilo v USA, kde sa v pomerne krátkom období, aj napriek vysokej nezamestnanosti a takmer nulovému rastu miezd, rast spotreby udržal. Presadzovanie štrukturálnych reforiem na trhu práce a na produkčných trhoch v krajinách EÚ je zložitá a nie krátkodobá cesta, ktorá sa pravdepodobne nezaobíde bez reforiem procedúr oddlžovania. Rozhodovacie procesy na úrovni lídrov krajín EÚ sú komplikované sankčnými postupmi voči Rusku, ktoré majú širšie geopolitické a ekonomické súvislosti. Z dlhodobého pohľadu stoja pred krajinami EÚ požiadavky vysokých objemov fi nancií pre adaptačné procesy spojené s dôsledkami nastupujúcich klimatických zmien. V kontexte týchto podmienok je situácia v krajinách EÚ komplikovanejšia, ako sa po prvých rokoch krízy predpokladalo, a príjmová polarizácia sa neprehlbuje iba v nových členských krajinách EÚ, ale tiež v západných ekonomikách.Na svetových ekonomických fórach sa od roku 2013 naplno artikulujú viaceré ekonomické a spoločenské ohrozenia, medzi nimi rezonujú tie, ktoré vyplývajú z prehlbovania príjmovej polarizácie v globálnom svete, najmä aká je cena polarizá-cie príjmov.
