Gender Roles, Cultural Norms, and Role of Income in Perceived Value: Women and Unpaid Work

Abstract

Women and unpaid work are specifically combined given the gender issues that have dominated women's roles across economies. Unpaid work reflects the lack of market value on women's domestic activities but specifically highlights that the efforts remain "work" that is not acknowledged by monetizable factors in the present economic system. The acceptance of women's gender-based and nonmarket valued work as "work" creates the opportunity establish value by the acknowledgment, itself, but also provides the opportunity to assess the holistic qualitative impact of women's contributions within intertemporal market value (e.g., impact of children on economic system).
