“…In extending this idea to Chicago, I argue temporality is also a key dimension in deciphering the cultural logics of the city space. With respect to Latinxs, their long-standing presence disturbs the city's origin myth, yet the silencing at play serves the greater purpose of, at best, perpetually deferring their social inclusion to some unnamed future (Rosa, 2019), or at worst, broadcasting a collective anxiety of a looming Latinx menace-the browning of America-which in turn shapes institutional exertions of social control and disposability (Chávez, 2021). And so, what might the significance of material artifacts bring to understanding a past, present, and future Latinx Chicago?…”
