“…This study showed that impairment of left ventricular function in terms of decreased LVEF related to subjective distress caused by traumatic events such as history of SCD and/or near‐fatal arrhythmias and inappropriate and/or appropriate shocks by ICD (i.e., PTSD) and its symptoms. The patients with decreased LVEF should be followed up carefully for potential psychological problems, in addition to female patients and those with complications of CHF . There are some underlying mechanisms indicating that impaired cardiac function increases the severity of PTSD in ICD patients.…”

“…We recruited 179 consecutive outpatients with ICD implantation based on our previous study . The inclusion criteria were as follows: patients who (1) had undergone ICD implantation, (2) were age >18 years, (3) were judged capable of completing the survey physically and cognitively, and (4) were capable of understanding spoken and written Japanese.…”

“…The prevalence of PTSD in ICD patients has been reported to be approximately 20%, although neither the definition of PTSD nor the clinical characteristics of patients were uniform across the studies [50–54]. A recent study by Rahmawati et al reported the prevalence (23.5%) of a PTSD score of ≥20 using the Impact of Event Scale‐Revised (IES‐R) in Japanese patients with an ICD; this result is comparable to previously reported results [24]. Kapa et al found that 21% of 223 ICD patients met the criteria for PTSD with an IES‐R score ≥24 at initial assessment (within 2 months after implantation), which decreased significantly to 12% after 6 months.…”

“…Furthermore, studies have explored gender differences in self‐rated health and quality of life (QoL) after ICD implantation and found that women are generally more affected on psychosocial outcomes than men. Women experience greater levels of anxiety and depression and are more prone to having lower QoL . These gender disparities may be attributed to differences in the way of dealing with stressful situations, in the acceptance of implanted mechanical devices, and in pain perception and pain tolerance …”
