Gender differences in willingness to pay for capital-intensive agricultural technologies: the case of fish solar tent dryers in Malawi

Abstract: Gender differences in fish processors' willingness to pay for a group-owned fish solar tent dryer (FSTD) are being assessed by using the double hurdle model. Willingness to pay (WTP) responses from 382 randomly selected fish processors were elicited through a bidding game in a contingent valuation method. The findings show that the average probability that fish processors will be willing to pay was 74% (76% for females and 72% for males). Furthermore, the average level of WTP was US$29.45 (US$26.46 for females… Show more

“…This meant that the amount of seed that smallholders were willing to use in the intensification process increased with age until it reached an inflection point (inverted U shape) where it decreased sharply as the trend changed. This was in line with the work of Chiwaula et al [15] and Zongo et al [46].…”

“…Some authors have used it to specifically address the adoption and intensity of use of improved maize varieties [11,12,13,14]. Others have used it to analyze instead the adoption and intensity of use of agricultural production techniques and other technologies that also used the Double Hurdle approach [15,16,17,18]. Some of these studies used this approach to control for endogeneity biases.…”

“…In that perspective, the women would need to be able to overcome the key constraints their microenterprises are facing, including low access to credit, no training, and no government recognition. Chiwaula et al (2018) found similar constraints, especially low resource base, education, and market access, among female solar tent fish dryers in Malawi.…”

“…Besides the prices of raw materials, experience is also considered as one of the key factors that positively influence income [65]. Chiwaula et al [66] and Affognon et al [67] mentioned that the use of a solar tent dryer might increase economic value through a reduction in quality losses often caused by dust, flies, and rodents.…”
