Gender differences in socio-demographic, clinical characteristics and psychiatric diagnosis in/of suicide attempters in a Mexican population

Abstract: Our results provide evidence that the characteristics of suicide attempt are different by gender in the Mexican population. Interventions are necessary for the development of prevention strategies that may lead to a reduction in suicidal behaviour. These preventive activities should consider the occupation for the female group and consumption of alcohol, cannabis or tobacco in the male group.

This conflicts with previous findings showing a greater proportion of male ED visits for self-inflicted injury were discharged compared to females.…”

“…The most consistent of these findings was the excess of prevalence for all outcomes in the State of Tabasco, a state that has had for a long time one of the highest rates of death by suicide in the country. 8 While a few reports have delved into the increase risk for suicide in Tabasco, 20,21 to the best of our knowledge the Encodat 2016 is the first report to show that suicidal behavior is also increased in this state. Future work in this area should try to explore the special circumstances and associated factors that may be present in Tabasco, but this is beyond the scope of the current report.…”

“…However, this factor seems to be associated different in Mexican suicides, to be married is the most prevalent status in suicides cases of Tabasco State population ( 17 ) whereas relatively more suicides were observed among singles in Mexico City, similar to studies reported before for Mexican general population ( 3 ) and elsewhere ( 12 , 50 56 ). Increased suicide among singles has been attributed to lack of family ties and increased individualism ( 57 ). The association between the risk of suicide and years of schooling has been investigated, and the results indicate that there is a negative correlation between suicide and higher educational attainment ( 58 63 ).…”
