“…A common theme running through the above results is that transgender people are similar to, but distinct from cisgender members of the gender group with which they identify (Nagoshi et al, 2012; Nagoshi et al, 2014; Roen, 2002). The results about RMA aside, cisgender and transgender individuals of the same gender identity differed along other dimensions.…”

“…These experiences may serve to give transgender people a better understanding of both masculine and feminine perspectives on issues such as sexual assault, both of which could partially inform their own unique perspective based on their experiences as transgender people. Given established gender differences in RMA, these blended experiences could, therefore, lead to variability in the RMA scores of transgender people if (for example) some transgender women have had more masculine socialization through their lifetime and, therefore, internalized more traditionally male perspectives on rape (Nagoshi et al, 2012, Nagoshi et al, 2014; Roen, 2002). Both of our control variables were also found to be significant.…”

Insisting on a strict binary is also often linked with heterosexuality as being the dominant driving strategy for the continuation of gender norms [42,43], and with the very presence of transnormativity in the society. Transnormativity is a hegemonic ideology that structures transgender experience, narratives, and identification into a hierarchy of legitimacy that is dependent upon binary models and standards, regardless of whether the individual(s) wish to undertake medical transition processesor not [10].…”

“…By using the woman/man binary, gender inequalities are further enforced [29]. Habitual application of the two-gender, two-sex binary frame similarly undermines queer and feminist scholars and campaigners who challenge essentialist thinking of gender and how social constructs are used as methods to reinforce “appropriate” behaviors for women and men and multiple forms of oppression such as sexism, homophobia, and racism [32,33,34]. What needs to be considered in disaster management is that neither gender nor sex are fixed terms; rather, their meanings are open to interpretation and fluidity.…”
