Gender and digital privacy: examining determinants of attitude toward digital piracy among youths in an emerging market

Abstract: Digital piracy is rampant in developing countries, including Indonesia. “…Some view digital piracy as a moral or ethical issue [139] that can be influenced by moral recognition, judgment, intensity, magnitude of the consequences [14], [23], [59], [62], [70], [119] and religiosity [13]. It can also be a function of proximity to those who are harmed by digital piracy [16].…”

“…Others have relied on the theory of reasoned action and planned behavior and show that attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and social norms provide a basis to explore a wide range of specific motivating factors that relate to digital piracy [4], [9], [17], [18], [62], [67], [79], [121]. For example, research has demonstrated that attitudes toward digital piracy can be influenced by Machiavellianism [4], [119], antipathy toward the music industry [62], [135], high costs and low benefits [67], self-efficacy [9], anticipated guilt [126], and idolatry [125]. National culture can also be a factor [56], [120], [136].…”

“…However, the association between cyberbullying perpetration and digital piracy only held for males when data were gender-stratified. Although more research is necessary, this difference between males and females could be related with previous studies which have shown that females get less involved in cyberbullying perpetration [ 45 , 46 ] and which also report less digital piracy than males [ 47 ]. This supports the gender socialization theory, which suggests that females and males have different perceptions and attitudes toward violence, crime, and ethical issues given their socialization differences [ 48 , 49 , 50 ].…”

“…İnternet erişiminin ve beraberinde dijital korsanlığın artması birçok araştırmanın konusu olmakla beraber tüketicilerin dijital korsan ürünlere karşı olumsuz tutumlarını etkileyen unsurların da araştırılmasına ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Bununla birlikte dijital korsanlıkla ilgili araştırmaların çoğu, korsanlık konusunu üreticiler açısından incelemeye odaklanmıştır; oysa az sayıda çalışma, tüketicilerin yasadışı telif hakkı olan materyalleri satın alma, indirme, paylaşma veya kopyalamalarını etkileyen faktörleri araştırmıştır (Tjiptono & Arli, 2016). Bu çalışmada dijital korsanlığı tercih eden tüketicilerin büyük bir bölümünü oluşturan üniversite öğrencilerinin (Sinha & Mandel, 2008) korsan ürünlere karşı olumsuz tutumları ile korsan ürün indirme, sosyal çevre, ahlaki yargı ve korku kavramları arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir.…”

“…Although internet access and the increase of digital piracy is the subject of many researches, it is necessary to investigate the factors that affect the negative attitudes of consumers towards digital piracy products. In addition, most of the research on digital piracy has focused on the issue of piracy; however, few studies have investigated the factors affecting the purchase, downloading, sharing or copying of illegal copyrighted material (Tjiptono & Arli, 2016). In this study, the negative attitudes of the university students towards pirated products, which constitute the majority of consumers who prefer digital piracy (Sinha & Mandel, 2008), and the relations among the concepts of pirated product downloading, social environment, moral judgment and fear were investigated.…”
