Gelation Landscape Engineering Using a Multi-Reaction Supramolecular Hydrogelator System

Abstract: Simultaneous control of the kinetics and thermodynamics of two different types of covalent chemistry allows pathway selectivity in the formation of hydrogelating molecules from a complex reaction network. This can lead to a range of hydrogel materials with vastly different properties, starting from a set of simple starting compounds and reaction conditions. Chemical reaction between a trialdehyde and the tuberculosis drug isoniazid can form one, two, or three hydrazone connectivity products, meaning kinetic ge… Show more

“…As the indispensable materials in human's daily life, soft materials are evaluated as one of the most promising materials in the 21st century . So far, they have been applied in many fields, such as tissue engineering, flexible‐photonics/‐electronics, drug delivery, catalysis, biological analysis and lithography .…”

“…The frequency dependence of storage modulus (G') of the gels was higher than their corresponding loss modulus (G”), it demonstrated that real gels were formed (Figure 4 A). 33 , 34 To the strain dependent storage, the G' of the gel with concentration of 10 mg/mL was 1.39 × 10 3 Pa, the G' increased greatly to 3.44 × 10 4 Pa as the concentration increasing to 20 mg/mL with the same strain of 1%. When the gel was subjected to a large strain of 50%, the G' of these two gels decreased dramatically, it revealed that the network structure of the gels was destroyed (Figure 4 B), but it could recover immediately after the stress was removed, 74.1% of the initial G' could be recovered in 5 min.…”

“…According to a modified method presented by Foster et al . 34 , hexa-methylenetetramine (15.10 g, 108 mmol) and phloroglucinol were added to 90 mL of trifluoroacetic acid under N 2 atmosphere, and the solution was heated to 100 °C and maintained for 2.5 h. Then 150 mL of 3 M HCl aqueous solution was mixed to allow for another 1-h reaction at 100 °C. After being cooled to room temperature, the mixture was filtered through Celite, extracted with ca.…”
