Gel polymer electrolyte based on PVDF-HFP:PMMA incorporated with propylene carbonate (PC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) plasticizers : electrical, morphology, structural and electrochemical properties

Abstract: To overcome the drawbacks of organic solvent−based liquid electrolytes and a solid polymer electrolyte as a separator in lithium polymer battery, in the recent study gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) using poly(vinylidene fluoride− hexafluropropylene) (PVDF−HFP) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as host polymers, lithium perchlorate (LiClO 4 ) salt as conducting species and propylene carbonate (PC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) plasticizers as an organic solvent has been prepared. The solution casting technique … Show more

“…The resultant polymer blend electrolyte was used in LIBs with an optimized concentration ratio of PVDF-HFP (75 wt.%), PMMA (25 wt.%), and LiClO₄ [ 30 ]. Apart from PM-based electrolytes, PVAc/PMMA-based electrolytes have been widely studied because of their lower glass transition temperature, which enhances the conductivity [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. In addition to conductivity, PVAc offers better wettability, promoting higher resistance against dissolution in non-aqueous electrolytes.…”

“…For instance, blending PMMA with PEO decreases the crystallinity of PEO and the brittleness of PMMA [ 13 ]. Copolymer PVDF-HFP has been demonstrated to be a promising polymer host, whose structure consists of a crystalline region (formed by VDF unit) and an amorphous region (formed by HFP unit) [ 14 ]. The crystalline region promotes tensile strength and chemical stability, while the amorphous region reduces chain regularity and crystallinity [ 15 ].…”

“…Organic carbonates represent possible alternative to VOCs [27] because they are ecological compounds with a wide range of potential applications. These compounds can be used to synthesize important products, including polymers [28,29] and surfactants [30,31], whereas organic carbonates themselves can be used as plasticizers [32,33] and fuel additives [34,35]. One of the most widely used organic carbonates is propylene carbonate (PC), which is a biodegradable and non-toxic organic solvent.…”
