This paper proposes a new scheduling policy for cluster-based servers called DAS (Deferred Assignment Scheduling). The main idea in DAS is to defer scheduling as much as possible in order to make better use of the accumulated information on job sizes. In broad outline, DAS operates as follows: (1) incoming jobs are held by the dispatcher in a buffer; (2) the dispatcher monitors the number of jobs being processed by each server; (3) when the number of jobs at a server queue drops below a prescribed threshold, the dispatcher sends to it the shortest job in its buffer.To gauge the efficacy of DAS, the paper presents simulation studies, using various data traces. The studies collected response times and slowdowns for two cluster configurations under multi-threaded and multi-process back-end server architectures. The experimental results show that in both architectures, DAS outperforms the Round-Robin policy in all traffic regimes, and the JSQ (Join Shortest Queue) policy in medium and heavy traffic regimes.

Classical solutions are very difficult to set up statically, and their cost is prohibitive in terms of both human and hardware resources. Virtualized cloud computing platforms provide new opportunities for stressing an application's scalability, by providing a large range of flexible and less expensive (pay-per-use model) computation units. On the basis of these advantages, load testing solutions could be provided on demand in the cloud. This paper describes a Benchmark-as-a-Service solution that automatically scales the load injection platform and facilitates its setup according to load profiles. Our approach is based on: (i) virtualization of the benchmarking platform to create self-scaling injectors; (ii) online calibration to characterize the injector's capacity and impact on the benched application; and (iii) a provisioning solution to appropriately scale the load injection platform ahead of time. We also report experiments on a benchmark illustrating the benefits of this system in terms of cost and resource reductions. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
