Geiger-Müller Discharge Propagation Velocities in Argon-Ethanol Mixtures

Abstract: A new method is described of measuring discharge propagation velocities in Geiger-Müller tubes utilizing the visible radiation emitted by the discharge. Propagation velocity data for argon are given as a function of pressure, overvoltage, and percentage of ethanol quenching agent. The results are in substantial agreement, not only with the available qualitative theoretical predictions, but also with previous quantitative measurements made by other techniques.
