Gdf5 is expressed in the developing skeleton of median fins of late-stage zebrafish, Danio rerio

Abstract: The dynamic expression of Gdf5 is described in the developing skeleton of the median fins of late-stage zebrafish, Danio rerio (6-45 days post-fertilization). In situ hybridization revealed expression in the mesenchyme between cartilage condensations of the endoskeletal supports of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. As development proceeds, the expression domains expand distally to surround tips of developing cartilages, consistent with a role in cartilage growth and differentiation. Gdf5 is later expressed in… Show more

“…GDF5 is required for the formation of at least some tetrapod limb joints Kingsley, 1996, 1999;Francis-West et al, 1999;Settle et al, 2003;Masuya et al, 2007) and consistent with the above-mentioned homology, gdf5 expression can be observed in endoskeleton joints in the fins during zebrafish larval development (Crotwell et al, 2001; Fig. 4G).…”

“…Lending support to this hypothesis, in the zebrafish, it was found that the dynamic expression patterns of the genes involved during fin formation (e.g., Gdf5,bmp2a,bmp2b) are similar for both the dorsal and anal fins and are associated with the bidirectional radial development patterns observed in both of these fins (Crotwell et al 2001(Crotwell et al , 2004. The integrated development of the endo-and exoskeletal components of the median fins is also thought to be regulated by a developmental module (Mabee et al 2002).…”
