GDF-15 (Growth Differentiation Factor 15) Is Associated With Lack of Ventricular Recovery and Mortality After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Abstract: Elevated GDF-15 correlates with lack of reverse remodeling and increased mortality after TAVR and improves risk prediction of mortality when added to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons score.

“…A number of sensitivity analyses for midterm mortality were performed. Excluding HRs for hs‐CRP 21,25 (Figure S1), combining ORs/HRs of 1‐year mortality 14‐17,22,25,26 (Figure S2), pooling HRs of ≥2‐year mortality 18,20,21,24 (Figure S3), and combining adjusted HRs 18,20‐22,26 (Figure S4) did not alter the primary results.…”

“…Iglesias‐Álvarez et al 21 and Sinning et al 25 provided data on hs‐CRP only, which were abstracted instead of those on CRP. Adjusted HRs were reported in five studies 18,20‐22,26 . We converted ORs/HRs of mortality per SD (or unit) increase in CRP levels to those for high vs low CRP levels in six studies, 21‐26 and vice versa in three studies 17,19,20 .…”

“…For instance, the study by Kim et al described a worse 1-year survival for TAVI patients with baseline hsCRP levels >2 mg/L. 16 In this sudy, pre-procedural inflammation, evaluated by levels of growth differentiation 15 (GDF-15), also seemed to be implicated in a lack of post-TAVI ventricular recovery, as assessed by global longitudinal strain (GLS) at 1-year follow-up. Furthermore, GLS at 1 month predicted 1-year mortality.…”

“…In the JUVENTAS (Rejuvenating Endothelial Progenitor Cells via Transcutaneous Intra-Arterial Supplementation) trial in patients with established peripheral artery disease elevated levels of GDF-15 were found a predictor of critical limb ischemia, increased risk of major amputation and all-cause mortality [27]. Elevated GDF-15 associated with a lack of reverse remodeling and increased mortality after transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure and improves risk prediction of CV mortality rate adding to traditional score model [28]. It has found that are associated with an increased yearly rate of all-cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations in out-patients [29].…”
