GC–MS analysis of volatile compounds of Perilla frutescens Britton var. Japonica accessions: Morphological and seasonal variability

Abstract: The results revealed that the harvest time and geographical origin caused polymorphisms in the essential oil composition and morphological traits in the Perilla accessions originating from China and Japan. Therefore, these chemotypes with desirable characters might be useful for industrial exploitation and for determining the harvest time.

“…The green-leaf chemotypes show only trace amount of anthocyanin type 261 compounds among all polyphenol compounds encountered [12]. 262 [36,37,38] based on the main components of the EOs, different chemotypes has been described in perilla such as perillaketone (PK) (isoegomaketone), perillaldehyde (PA), elsholtziaketone (EK), citral (C), phenylpropanoids (PP) (myristicin, dillapiole, elemicin), perillene (PL), beta-caryophyllene, myristicine (MT), limonene, piperitenone (PT). EOs have known to posses various bioactivities including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiinflammatory, antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, antidiabetic, antiprotozoal and antioxidants as well [35].…”

Perilla leaves produce a wide array of phenolics and terpenes [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Volatile compounds in perilla leaves are mainly monoterpenes (perillaldehydes and perillaketones) and phenylpropenes (myristicin, elemicin and dillapiole) [ 23 , 25 , 26 ].…”
