GC-MS analysis of mango stem bark extracts (Mangifera indica L.), Haden variety. Possible contribution of volatile compounds to its health effects

Abstract: Mango stem bark extracts (MSBE) have been used as bioactive ingredients for nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical formulations due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. We performed the MSBE preparative column liquid chromatography, which led to the resolution and identification by GC-MS of 64 volatile compounds: 7 hydrocarbons, 3 alcohols, 1 ether, 3 aldehydes/ketones, 7 phenols, 20 terpenoids (hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives), 9 steroids, 4 nitrogen compounds, and… Show more

“…Several compounds identified in this study match previous reports for other species of Bursera [ 4 , 57 ] and species in the family Lauraceae [ 27 , 58 ]. In the case of Mi, the previously reported VOCs [ 59 , 60 , 61 ] do not coincide with those identified here, since these authors used different analysis techniques based on tissue extracts. We used fresh and aged grated bark, and in the case of mango (Mi) only six highly volatile compounds were detected in samples taken at 2 h ( Table 2 ).…”
