GB-InSAR monitoring and observational method for landslide emergency management: the Montaguto earthflow (AV, Italy)

Abstract: Abstract. On 10 March 2010, because of the heavy rainfall in the preceding days, the Montaguto landslide (Southern Italy) reactivated, affecting both state road 90 "Delle Puglie" and the Rome-Bari railway. A similar event occurred on May 2005 and on September 2009. As a result, the National Civil Protection Department (DPC) started an accurate monitoring and analysis program. A monitoring project using the GB-InSAR (ground-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar) system was emplaced to investigate the l… Show more

“…The first advantage is related to the remote-sensing nature of GBSAR, which can be accomplished without installing sensors or targets on the structure at hands, while operating at a significant distance from it (up to 1–2 km). This can be useful to guarantee the safety of the monitoring activities, especially in the case of emergency situations [ 99 ]. The second remarkable advantage is that GBSAR may be operated day and night and in all weather conditions.…”

“…In this way, it has been possible to draw the boundary (polygon feature) in GIS environment. Based on the morphological characteristics, the Montaguto landslide can be divided into three main sector (Ferrigno et al, 2017): the upper sector represents the source area, the middle sector is the propagation area and the lower sector is the accumulation area (landslide toe). In each section, the eroded and accumulated volumes have been calculated.…”

“…Understanding the physical processes of landslide and transport interactions. Examples of methods include remote sensing (Giordan et al, 2018), spatial analysis of landslide inventories and road networks (Donnini et al, 2017), landslide susceptibility mapping (Brenning et al, 2015;Meneses et al, 2019), landslide models (Santangelo et al, 2019), and measurement of landslide flows (Sidle et al, 2014).…”

“…Mitigation of transportation network landslide hazard, exposure, vulnerability and overall risk. Methods span both physical and planning measures and include minimising exposure by monitoring/early warning coupled with road closure systems (Graziella et al, 2015;Ferrigno et al, 2017), minimising hazard by slope engi-Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union.…”
