Gastroprotective effect of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) against ethanol-induced oxidative stress in rat

Abstract: BackgroundWe aimed in the present study, at investigating the gastroprotective effect of carob pods aqueous extract (CPAE) against ethanol-induced oxidative stress in rats as well as the mechanism implicated.MethodsAdult male wistar rats were used and divided into six groups of ten each: control, EtOH (80 % v/v, 4 g/kg b.w.), EtOH 80 % + various doses of CPAE (500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg, b.w.) and EtOH + Famotidine (10 mg/kg, p.o.) Animals were perorally (p.o.) pre-treated with CPAE during 15 days and intoxicate… Show more

“…This shows that the plant is safe and has no toxicity when administered orally up to 5 g/kg. The absence of acute toxicity in rats ensured a good margin of safety for the doses of this extract in the experimental protocols of gastric lesions, as no mortality recorded for each animal [10][11][12].…”

“…102 Carob extracts are being studied in recent years for gastroprotective activities, and they were found highly active, so far. [155][156][157][158][159] Most studies were done in vivo after induction of gastric disorder in animals. These diorders were induced by various chemicals such as ethanol, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride or dextran sulfate sodium.…”

“…155 Aqueous extract of pods was tested for antioxidant activity (DPPH) and against ethanol-induced oxidative gastric stress (lipoperoxidation and hydrogen peroxide increase) in rats and found active. 156 Aqueous extract of pods was tested against dextran sulfate sodiuminduced sub-acute experimental ulcerative colitis in adult Wistar rats. Results were positive and authors attributes this to phenolic compounds in Carob.…”
