“…Many abietane acids exhibit antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms. Dehydroabietic acid derivatives have been proved to act as antiulcer agents (Sepúlveda et al 2005), and several abietane acids have shown cardiovascular effects. Furthermore, several side effects of diterpene acids, such as resin acids within pulp and paper mill effluents, are well known to be noxious to aquatic organisms (Rissanen et al 2003;Kamaya et al 2005).…”

“…[28] [29] AGS cells (human gastric cell line; American Type Culture Collection, Manassas, VA) were seeded on 96-well plates at a density of 5000 cells/well and cultured in 200 ml RPMI-1640 (GIBCO) containing 10% FBS (GIBCO) and 10 mg/ml gentamycin in a CO 2 incubator at 378 for 24 h. Then, 2 ml of test drug dissolved in DMSO was added into each well for 72 h, cell proliferation was measured by the MTT ( ¼ 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium hydrobromide) assay (Sigma-Aldrich Co., St. Louis, MO, USA) for cell viability. AGS were incubated with 0.25 mg/ ml MTT for 4 h at 378, and the reaction was terminated by the addition of 100% i-PrOH.…”

“…The potential of abietane acids as source for bioactive compounds was reviewed by San Felician et al (1993). It has been found that pine resin acids and their derivatives have shown a broad spectrum of biological activities such as antitumor (Rao et al, 2008a, b), antimicrobial (Savluchinske et al, 1999), antiinflammatory (Fernandez et al, 2001), and gastroprotective (Sepulveda et al, 2005) effects. Rosin acids were reported to have properties of enhancing the inhibitory activity of an anticancer drug in cervical carcinoma cells, hepatocellular carcinoma cells, or breast cancer cells (Lin and Chuang, 2003).…”
