Gastrointestinal nematodes in ostriches, Struthio camelus, in different regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: The ratite group is composed of ostriches, rheas, emus, cassowaries and kiwis. Little research has been done on parasitism in these birds. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of infections by gastrointestinal nematodes in ostriches in the state of Rio de Janeiro. For this, fecal samples were collected from 192 on 13 farms. From each sample, four grams of feces were used to determine the eggs per gram of feces (EPG) count, by means of the McMaster technique. Part of the feces sample was used… Show more

“…The disease of acute and chronic eimeriosis leads to the death of ostrich at the age of 3-4 months. The presence of helminths we have identified in ostriches is confirmed by other researchers (Ponce Gordo et al, 2002;Ederli & de Oliveira, 2015;Gallo et al, 2020). Analysis of the invasiveness of ostriches, showed that gradually changes parasstophauna pathogens helminths.…”

“…Gastrointestinal parasites are one of the most common pathogens, and can not only lead to nutritional and immune inadequacy as well as stunted growth and delayed development ( 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 23 ), but also have adverse effects on the quality of camel meat and milk ( 18 , 21 ). These consequences of parasitical infection are potential threats to food safety and the health of the majority of herders ( 1 , 9 , 12 , 13 , 27 , 28 ).…”

“…Free-range poultry and captive wild birds are commonly housed in limited areas with high animal stocking and access to the environment and co-habit with other bird species and wild avifauna, consequently being exposed to a wide variety of generalist or host-specific gastrointestinal (GI) parasites, namely coccidia and helminths, which are still responsible for severe health and economic concerns in poultry farms and zoological collections worldwide [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”

“…There are also other species of Libyostrongylus , such as L. magnus and L. dentatus , the latter having only been recorded in North America thus far. Codiostomum struthionis is also commonly found in ratites, inhabiting the distal cecum and upper rectum of adult birds and occasionally being responsible for hemorrhagic processes and oedema in the cecum’s mucosa [ 2 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
