“…As intestinal ischemia is a rare, but highly lethal complication after cardiac surgery, occurring in 0.5% and being fatal in up to a quarter of patients [ 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 ], the use of PN is often favored in cardiac surgery patients, especially within the first days after operation. However, there is no sufficient evidence available to evaluate the role of postoperative PN and its influence on clinically relevant outcome data, including survival, disease progression and morbidity in cardiac surgery patients.…”

“…While cardiac surgery is often used to treat complications of ischemic heart disease, correct congenital heart disease, or treat valvular heart disease from various causes, including endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease, and atherosclerosis, these procedures have several disadvantages [ 2 4 ]. Cardiac surgery is suggested to be associated with high risks of cardiovascular complications and other adverse events when performing operations, which are often resulted in increased hospital stay and even mortality [ 5 10 ]. Although great improvements in equipment, techniques and medical care have been achieved, and decreased the incidences of major complication rates and mortality [ 11 16 ], effective and safe perioperative medication is required to further reduce these negative events [ 8 , 11 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…The most common GI complications are postoperative ileus and GI hemorrhage, while mesenteric ischemia and intestinal perforation are GI complications with the highest mortality. GI complications increase LOS and mortality [ 3 , 10 , 123 , 124 , 125 ].…”
