The anti-ulcer properties of the leaf extracts of Borreria ocymoides Burm. F. (Rubiaceae) was investigated. Sixty (60) albino rats of either sex weighing 160-216g and fifteen (15) albino mice weighing 25-36 g were used for the study. Standard pharmacological methods were used to carry out acute toxicity (LD 50 ) and phytochemical screening of the plant extract. Gastrointestinal and anti-ulcer studies were performed using standard methods. The extract had an oral LD 50 of > 8000mg/kg in mice. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of abundant amounts of carbohydrates, reducing sugars, alkaloids, tannins, proteins, and moderate amounts of flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins and glycosides. There were also trace amounts of resins and steroids. The aqueous and methanolic extracts of Borreria ocymoides (AEBO and MEBO) at dose level of 800mg/kg orally, increased gastro-intestinal motility by 6.1% and 22.5% respectively. This increase was not significant when compared with the negative control (p > 0.05). The laxative drug, bisacodyl (5mg/kg), increased motility by 17.4%. However, when bisacodyl (5mg/kg) was administered concomitantly either with AEBO (800mg/kg) or MEBO (800mg/kg), gastrointestinal motility was increased significantly by 67.8% or 70.1% respectively (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the AEBO and MEBO (800mg/kg b.w, p.o) produced significant ulcer protective potency against indomethacin and histamine induced gastric ulceration when compared with the negative control (p < 0.001). The MEBO had comparable ulcer protective potency with cimetidine. Both extracts possess gastric ulcer protective potency and justifies the use of this plant for ulcer treatment.

Ficus sur Forssk is one of the wild edible plants in Ethiopia. Its fruits are commonly used in different parts of Ethiopia. Ficus sur fruits and the soil of plant were collected from three different region of Ethiopia. Levels of selected metals (K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb) in the fruit and soil were determined by microwave plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy. The validity of the optimized procedure was evaluated by the analysis of spiked samples whose recoveries were in the range of 90.5-108%. The concentration range of metals (mg/kg) in Ficus sur fruit samples were K (12372-13687), Ca (3261-5389), Mg (744-785), Fe (418-479), Zn (23.9-25.4), Mn (9.13-18.0), Cu (6.78-7.97), Pb (2.45-6.23) and Cd (0.76-1.42), respectively and in the soil were in the range of 1406-5566 (K), 1248-1453 (Mg), 3140-9403 (Ca), 1186-2421 (Mn), 89763-96704 (Fe), 7.33-13.4 (Pb), 41.4-73.4 (Cu), 123-157 (Zn) and not detected Cd). Ficus sur fruit contains all the essential metals to human. However, it also contains toxic metals Cd at trace level and Pb at higher level than World Health Organization permission level.

O processo de secagem por atomização ou spray-drying é uma das operações mais frequentes para a obtenção de extratos secos a partir de plantas medicinais. No entanto, durante o processo de preparação desses insumos farmacêuticos ativos (IFA) de origem vegetal, uma série de fatores podem afetar a qualidade desses produtos intermediários. Por meio de levantamento bibliográfico científico e da legislação brasileira sobre medicamentos fitoterápicos, vivências do grupo em pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P&D) da Fiocruz e da realização de Brainstorming entre os integrantes da equipe, foi elaborado um diagrama de causa e efeito (Diagrama de Ishikawa). Tal pesquisa teve o objetivo de levantar pontos críticos no processo de produção desses IFA de origem vegetal, apontando aspectos do processo de spray-drying de ordem teórica e prática que poderiam afetar a qualidade do produto fitoterápico. Com base nas informações mencionadas no diagrama e na discussão desses pontos acerca de cada etapa até a preparação do extrato seco, foi possível racionalizar o processo de obtenção desse intermediário, com foco em transformá-lo em produto fitoterápico.
