Gastrocnemius Recession

Abstract: The Grand Rapids Arch Collapse classifications create a novel system for categorizing and correlating numerous common foot and ankle conditions related to a falling arch. The algorithm for treating these conditions is exceptionally replicable and has excellent outcomes. Gastrocnemius equinus diagnosis plays a crucial role in the pathology of arch collapse. A contracture of the gastrocnemius muscle is increasingly recognized as the cause of several foot and ankle conditions. The authors have expanded their indi… Show more

“…Gastrocnemius or Achilles tendon lengthening reportedly removes a deforming force in Charcot midfoot collapse [38]. We found a clear correlation between Achilles tendon and Gastrocnemius tendon lengthening and treatment success or better prevention of failure.…”

“…Since equinus contracture occurs in 70% of the foot deformities, 23,39 this has to be corrected irrespective of the type of foot surgery to achieve lasting correction. 2,9,10,19,45 We performed lengthening of the gastrosoleus complex only in 18 feet. The others had either a primary insufficiency of the triceps surae or insufficiency following previous lengthening of the Achilles tendon, which needed to be addressed by augmenting the Achilles tendon with the tibialis posterior.…”

“…10,16 The previous cadaver studies further confirmed that the tight gastrocnemiussoleus system plays a vital pathologic role in the formation of arch flattening and forefoot abduction. 4,33 Although the sequential relationship between the development of equinus contracture and flatfoot still remains controversial, 1,16 it is thought that the assessment and release of the tightened gastrocnemius or triceps surae have become a routine part in the treatment of flatfoot. The Baumann procedure is widely used as a part of the multilevel surgery in spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.…”
