Gastro-oesophageal reflux in preterm infants.

Abstract: SUMMARY Gastro-oesophageal reflux in very low birthweight infants was studied using a new 1 mm monocrystalline antimony oesophageal pH electrode. Gastro-oesophageal reflux was detected in 30 (85%) subjects. The mean (SEM) number of episodes of reflux in 24 hours was 12-1 (2.1), and 3-2 (0.6) lasted over five minutes. The mean reflux index was 4-5 (1.0)%, and the longest episode 17-1 (4 6) 17*1. Reflux was unrelated to postconceptional age or to resting lower oesophageal sphincter pressure. The mean reflux inde… Show more

“…GOR on its own is a well-acknowledged risk factor for pulmonary complications like aspiration pneumonia, laryngo-and bronchospasm and apnoea [7][8][9]. Routine oesophageal pH monitoring has therefore been recommended when methylxanthines are administered to young infants [6].…”

“…No significant differences were found in the proportions of infants who had apnea between those with and without GER (10). Most other studies have also failed to document a temporal relationship between apnea and GER (17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23). We now highlight that there is no such relationship in either the prone or, importantly, the supine position in convalescent, prematurely born infants.…”
