Gastric Ulcer: A Double-Blind Comparison of 100 Mg Pirenzepine plus Antacid Versus 800 Mg Cimetidine plus Antacid

Abstract: Fifty-five patients with endoscopically confirmed gastric ulcers received either cimetidine (28 patients) or pirenzepine (27 patients) in a randomized double-blind manner. Fifty-seven per cent of the patients treated with cimetidine and 48% of those treated with pirenzepine presented with endoscopically healed ulcers after 4 weeks of treatment. By 8 weeks complete healing had occurred in 83% of the patients taking cimetidine and 76% of those taking pirenzepine. These differences were not statistically signific… Show more

“…With respect to the ulcer-healing rate, there were no significant differences between H 2 RAs [52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59]. Moreover, pirenzepine [60], sucralfate [61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68], and misoprostol [69,70] are recommended because each of their ulcer-healing rates was equivalent to those of H 2 RAs. Although vonoprazan could not be cited because the literature was searched from 1983 to 2012, vonoprazan has been receiving much attention in recent years because of its high ulcer-healing rate for gastric ulcers compared with lansoprazole [71].…”

“…In a small study on 57 patients with gastric ulcers, cimetidine and pirenzepine lead to similar healing rates after 8 weeks, 83% and 76%, respectively [16].…”
