Gastric neoplasm: Ultrasound and CT evaluation

Abstract: Ultrasound may complement conventional barium evaluation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Thirty cases of gastric neoplasm were evaluated with ultrasound; 8 of these patients also were evaluated with CT. The different sonographic appearances of gastric neoplasms will be presented based on these cases and a review of the literature. The specificity of these changes is discussed. In addition, the complementary role of CT scanning in the evaluation of gastric neoplasms is described.

“…Although observations have been made on 63 neoplasms, only 16 CT illustrations appear in the literature to date [2][3][4][5][6][7]9]. In the present report we record our observations on CT of gastric neoplasms illustrating the CT image in 9 additional cases.…”

“…Because of the rarity of these lesions, diagnostic evaluation with computed t o m o g r a p h y (CT) has been reported infrequently [3,4] and has been limited to gastric lesions. The CT appearance of leiomyosarcoma metastatic to the liver has recently been described [5,6].…”

“…Therefore, accurate determination of the extent of tumor growth is essential for the proper management of patients with gastric cancer 1 ) . Abdominal computed tomography (CT) 2 10 ) and ultrasonography (US) 11 14 ) have been used to preoperatively predict the stage of the gastric cancer.…”

“…Abdominal CT or US can demonstrate not only the gastric wall and the perigastric tissue, but also the direct extension of tumor into the contiguous organs and the presence of distant metastases 15 ) . Some investigators have reported that abdominal CT or US provided equally accurate preoperative staging information of gastric cancer 2 – 6 , 12 14 ) and have claimed that it could replace the operative exploration in patients with unresectable tumor.…”
