Gastric Melanoma of Unknown Primary

Abstract: We describe a case of a patient with anemia referring to our Digestive Endoscopy Unit. Upper GI endoscopy revealed a polypoid lesion with an ulcerated central depression. Histopathological examination of the biopsy specimen taken during endoscopy revealed a gastric metastatic melanoma. The dermatologic inspection failed in finding the primary melanoma. The importance of endoscopic examination in the diagnostic process of metastatic patients with unknown primaries is highlited by this case.

“…Melanoma of unknown primary (MUP) is defined as a metastatic melanoma within the lymph nodes, subcutaneous tissues, and other distant sites without an evident primary lesion and its incidence is low (3.2%) among all the cases of melanoma, as shown by [ 50 ]. It was reported [ 51 ] that it comprises 3–4% of all melanomas and that, based on the evidence that melanoma can undergo regression at its primary site, spontaneous regression of the primary lesion is a well-established theory.…”
