Gastric low-grade B-cell MALT lymphoma: treatment, response, and genetic alteration

Abstract: Approximately 10% of gastric low-grade B-cell lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type are unresponsive to Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori) eradication treatment, and many of them contain an API2-MALT1 chimeric transcript mediated by t(11;18)(q21;q21) translocation. We here review the current status on the interrelationship among clinical features, H. pylori infection status, responsiveness to antibacterial treatment, and API2-MALT1 chimeric transcript of gastric MALT lymphoma in a unicenter … Show more

“…In contrast, other reports showed a high prevalence of the translocation in patients with H. pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma (50-100%). (Nakamura et al 2003;Ye et al 2003;Nakamura et al 2006), which is consistent with our current study. Differences in the prevalence of the translocation in the patient groups of these studies may explain the diverse outcomes in H. pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma.…”

“…We also established that the presence of t(11;18) is significantly correlated with unresponsiveness to H. pylori eradication. 69,70 Detection of this translocation thus has significant implication for the treatment of patients with gastric MALT lymphomas.…”

“…Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been documented in up to 90% of patients with low-grade MALT lymphoma (11,18,22) . The discovery of a causative role for H. pylori in the development of gastric marginal zone lymphoma of the MALT type has dramatically altered the therapeutic approach to patients with early stage disease.…”

“…Case 5 presented a large lesion in the gastric body and was submitted to subtotal gastrectomy associated with adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nowadays, in the patients submitted to the curative resection of the primary gastric lymphoma in initial stage, we indicated adjuvant chemotherapy to eradicate microscopic residual disease.Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has been documented in up to 90% of patients with low-grade MALT lymphoma (11,18,22) .
