Gastric Helicobacters in Cats

Abstract: The types of helicobacter which are found in the stomachs of carnivorous pets, especially cats, have been traditionally referred to as 'gastric helicobacter-like organisms' (GHLOs). These are microaerophilic, Gram-negative, spiral bacteria with multiple terminal flagellae and are endowed with high-level urease activity which allows them to survive in an acidic environment. Certain species have one or more periplasmic fibrils. The two GHLOs most commonly found in cats are Helicobacter felis and a species relate… Show more

“…Large spiral bacteria (4 to 10 μm) identified in the stomachs of dogs were initially called Gastrospirillum hominis. They were later reclassified as Helicobacter heilmannii (Lecoindre et al, 2000). The mode of transmission still unknown, although epidemiologic studies suggest close person to person contact and intra familial spread.…”

“…Helicobacter ‐like organisms are considered to cause gastric pathology in humans and domestic animals (Heilmann and Borchard, 1991; Lavelle et al., 1994). Helicobacter ‐like organisms are observed in biopsies from the stomachs of dogs, cats, pigs and other carnivores (Lavelle et al., 1994; Eaton et al., 1996; Fox and Lee, 1997; Jalava et al., 1997; Simpson et al., 1999; Lecoindre et al., 2000;Prachasilpchai et al., 2007; Robic et al., 2007), and this genus contains several dozen species from a wide range of hosts (Seymour et al., 1994; Harper et al., 2000). Five species of Helicobacters have been cultivated from canine stomachs including Helicobacter felis , Helicobacter bizzozeronii, Helicobacter salomonis , Helicobacter bilis and Flexispira rappini (Thompson et al., 1994; Eaton et al., 1996; Hanninen et al., 1996; Jalava et al., 1997; Lee et al., 1998).…”
