Gastric emptying after roux-y and billroth-I gastrectomy depends on viscosity of meal and contractile patterns of small intestine in dogs

Abstract: The aim of the study was to examine gastrointestinal motility after distal gastrectomy and the influence of meal viscosity on gastric emptying. Gastrointestinal motility and gastric emptying of acaloric meals with different viscosities were measured in normal dogs and after a two-thirds gastrectomy with Billroth-I or Roux-Y gastroenterostomy. After distal gastrectomy, gastric emptying depended on the viscosity of the meal, as in normal dogs. Acaloric viscous meals emptied significantly faster in the Billroth-I… Show more

“…However, this method may not be useful for postoperative patients because of poor visualization due to postoperative adhesion. According to a report by Ehrlein et al, 14 gastric emptying is greatly influenced by the test meal composition, and the acetaminophen marker method mainly evaluates the gastric emptying of semisolids. Koizumi et al 13 assessed gastric emptying in comparison with radionuclide labeling methods and the acetaminophen marker method, and concluded that the acetaminophen marker method could be an indirect quantitative measurement of gastric emptying.…”

“…In dogs and humans, gastric emptying following distal gastrectomy is dependent on the viscosity of food material ingested and on small intestinal contractility, which is influenced by the gastroenterotomy technique used (Ehrlein et al . ). There are no studies in the horse describing motor function of any section of the alimentary tract following resection, but disruption to intestinal motor activity has been reported in dogs following distal intestinal resection (Quigley and Thompson ).…”

“…Our results show that a drastic reduction of the size of the gastric remnant, to about 10%, with Roux-en-Y jejunostomy improves passage of food and diminishes symptoms of stasis after HSV with partial gastrectomy (BII). Recently, Ehrlein et al [1987] reported that, in the dog, gastric emptying was accelerated by BI resection and delayed by partial gas trectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction. This differ ence was attributed mainly to the transsection of the small intestine that goes with the Roux-en-Y proce dure.…”
