Gastric duplication cyst in adult: Challenge for surgeons

Abstract: Gastric duplication cysts (GDCs) are uncommon developmental anomalies found primarily in children, being rarely seen in adults. Duplications can occur anywhere in the intestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Accurate diagnosis of cysts before resection is difficult even using the most advanced imaging techniques. In this report, we present and discuss a case of GDC in a 25-year-old man treated laparoscopically. Patient admitted to our department with complaints of epigastric pain and swelling. Magnetic res… Show more

“…Despite the diverse range of symptoms associated with this condition, it is noteworthy that the early signs which led to the identification of the gastric duplication cyst in our patient are common across most case reports. Thus, we highlighted symptoms such as abdominal pain, weight loss and vomiting [10,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. Although unlikely, this symptomatology should raise a red flag for practitioners regarding a possible gastric duplication cyst.…”

“…The location, shape, size, density, and thickness of the cyst wall and its surrounding area can be established by CT and MRI, which are often used as examination means for further diagnosis, cyst location and qualitative diagnosis. 15 , 16 Upper gastrointestinal radiography is often used for preoperative selective examination. When the cyst is large or connected with the gastric cavity, the filling defect of the gastric wall can be seen.…”

“…Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is also used in order to rule out malignancy, however, its use remains controversial, as elevated levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen (CA) 19-9 have been found in samples of benign lesions [9,10]. The differential diagnosis includes gastrointestinal stromal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatic heterotopia, pancreatic cystic lesions, and mesenteric cysts among others [9,[11][12][13]. In a retrospective review, which analyzed data from 319 patients, the rate of misdiagnosis was 72.14% [3].…”
