Gastric Cancer Patients with Bone Marrow Metastasis: A Single-Center Experience and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Objectives:The purpose of this study is to investigate bone marrow metastasis in patients with Gastric cancer. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with gastric cancer who applied to our clinic between 2010-2016. Results: 896 patients with gastric cancer were included in the study. Patients had metastatic bone marrow in 8 patients. When the laboratory results were evaluated; in 5 patients trombocytopenia with anemia were present, 2 patients had only tromboscytopenia, one patient had only anemia. In a… Show more

“…Bone marrow involvement, although rare, is more found in GC among solid tumors, and not only has it a poorer prognosis but is also more frequent in patients in their fifth decade of life, with gastric carcinomas with poorly cohesive cells and/or signet ring cells and with extensive bone metastasis [5,9,[16][17][18][19]. The most typical hematologic abnormality observed in these patients is thrombocytopenia [5].…”

The most typical hematologic abnormality observed in these patients is thrombocytopenia [5]. Most of these features were also present in our patient, however, differently from our case, bone marrow metastasis may also present as intravascular disseminated coagulation, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, and leukoerythroblastic reaction [19].…”

“…The incidence of bone metastasis is 2–3% [ 4 , 5 ]. A bone marrow metastasis is rare, with an incidence of less than 1% [ 6 ]. In DCBM, cancer cells diffusely infiltrate the bone marrow, then proliferate explosively, causing bone destruction and hematological complications [ 1 ].…”

“…Bony metastasis from GI cancers are relatively rare and bone marrow metastasis is an even rarer event which is associated with worst prognosis. The most common hematologic abnormality in patients with bone marrow metastasis in gastric cancer is thrombocytopenia [3]. The metastatic path of spread in gastric carcinoma is generally hematogenous and also via lymphatics [4].…”

“…Metastasis in gastric and colorectal cancer is usually in the liver, peritoneum and lymph nodes and less frequently in ovaries, lungs, central nervous system and bone. Bone marrow is a rare region for metastasis and its involvement is associated with worst prognosis [3]. Development of metastasis is a concern for patients and clinicians because it is fatal and causes mass-effect and meddles with homeostasis.…”
