Gastric B-Cell Lymphoma with Mott Cell Differentiation in a Dog

Abstract: A gastric lymphoid tumor with involvement of regional lymph nodes and spleen was diagnosed in an 8-year-old crossbreed male dog with a 6-month history of gastrointestinal disease. Despite surgical excision and palliative therapy (prednisolone and cimetidine), the dog was euthanatized due to worsening of clinical signs. At necropsy, multiple white, solid, nodular, infiltrative masses were observed in the stomach, duodenum, spleen, liver, and lungs in association with generalized lymph node enlargement. Cytology… Show more

“…Mott cell differentiation characterizes a rare subtype of B‐cell lymphoma, which has been reported previously in only 6 dogs and a ferret . The neoplastic cells in the lymph nodes of the dog described here had unusual bimorphism in cytologic specimens, and lymphocyte morphology differed markedly from that in the peripheral blood, requiring further histologic and immunophenotypic evaluation.…”

“…6,16,24 These cases primarily involved the gastrointestinal tract and lymph nodes 6,16,24 ; a single case had multiple nodules in spleen, liver, and lung. 6,16,24 In contrast, the gastrointestinal tract was not affected in the ferret in the current report; however, marked splenomegaly, generalized lymphadenomegally, and scattered white nodules in the liver were present. Benign plasma cell neoplasms in dogs and cats are usually irregularly positive for lambda and kappa light chains.…”

“…Furthermore, three cases of gastrointestinal Mott cell tumor have been previously reported in veterinary medicine (11,12,13). Signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the canine stomach is characterised by a diffuse infiltration of signet ring tumour cells in the gastric wall.…”

“…In dogs, these are rare neoplastic conditions, described as solid, multiple masses, characterized by the frequent presence of distant metastases at time of diagnosis (13). Additionally, in these neoplastic conditions Mott cells and Rbs are usually found in small numbers among a larger population of polymorphous lymphocytic infiltrate (13).…”
