GASP. I. Gas Stripping Phenomena in Galaxies with MUSE

Abstract: GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE) is a new integral-field spectroscopic survey with MUSE at the VLT aiming at studying gas removal processes in galaxies. We present an overview of the survey and show a first example of a galaxy undergoing strong gas stripping. GASP is obtaining deep MUSE data for 114 galaxies at z=0.04-0.07 with stellar masses in the range 10 9.2 -10 11.5 M in different environments (galaxy clusters and groups, over more than four orders of magnitude in halo mass). GASP targ… Show more

“…It is generally low, ranging from < < ( ) q 6.6 log 7.3. This is in agreement with other galaxies in the GASP survey Poggianti et al 2017), even though in this case a clear clumpy pattern emerges, while in other galaxies a more smooth distribution is observed. Hα knots tend to have a systematically large value of q: the median value integrated across the entire galaxy is 6.8, while the median value in the Hα knots is 7.…”

“…They conclude that some processes related to morphology must set the local SF activity of a galaxy. Recently, Vulcani et al (2019) studied the spatially resolved MS in a sample of 30 local late-type star-forming galaxies up to four effective radii, exploiting the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE survey (GASP, Poggianti et al 2017). They find that Σ and Σ SFR correlate with a scatter of 0.3 dex, larger than the one observed for CAL-IFA and MaNGA galaxies.…”
