Gasoline Price Cycle Drivers: An Australian Case Study

Abstract: In many retail gasoline markets, prices follow a saw-toothed cycle first posited by Edgeworth (1925) and formalised by Maskin & Tirole (1988). A growing literature explores driving factors behind such cycles, most particularly in Canada and the US. This paper explores price cycles in a retail gasoline market in Australia with a unique regulatory environment that provides a census of data. We make use of a threshold regression model, and pay particular attention to local market effects and market structure. Bo… Show more

“…Most of the empirical studies on gasoline retail pricing focus on U.S. markets (e.g., Shepard 1993;Borenstein and Shepard 1996;Doyle et al 2010;Lewis and Noel 2011;Zimmerman et al 2013), Canada (e.g., Slade 1987Slade , 1992Atkinson 2009;Noel 2009Noel , 2015Byrne et al 2015), and Australia (e.g., Wang 2008Wang , 2009aWills-Johnson and Bloch 2010a;Valadkhani 2013). “…Here, we present an alterative approach to account for the inequalities between outlets by modelling market structure more directly through the use of networks, and considering market power to be related to positioning that network. We establish the link between network position and higher prices in a separate paper (Bloch & Wills-Johnson, 2010d) and use those findings here to give policy recommendations. retail petroleum market in Perth as a case study.…”

“…We make use here of Burt's (1992) measures of efficiency and constraint. Elsewhere (Bloch & Wills-Johnson, 2010d) we regress these measures, along with a number of other independent variables, against price, using Hansen's (1996Hansen's ( , 1999Hansen's ( , 2000 Threshold…”

“…Petrol price cycles have been observed in capital cities of the U.S., Canada and Australia. For example, Lewis (2008), Doyle et al (2010), Lewis (2012), Zimmerman et al (2013) and Noel and Chu (2015) in the U.S.; Eckert and West (2004), Atkinson (2009), Byrne and de Roos (2017) in Canada; Wang (2009), Bloch and Wills (2010aand 2010b), de Roos and Katayama (2013 in Australia; and several European countries have been detected such as Siekmann (2017), and Alderighi and Baudino (2015).…”
