Gas Turbine Engine Control Design Using Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks

Abstract: This paper presents a successful approach in designing a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for a specific Jet Engine. At first, a suitable mathematical model for the jet engine is presented by the aid of SIMULINK. Then by applying different reasonable fuel flow functions via the engine model, some important engine-transient operation parameters (such as thrust, compressor surge margin, turbine inlet temperature, etc.) are obtained. These parameters provide a precious database, which train a neural network. At the s… Show more

“…Modelling of turbine engines and control systems has been a useful technical and cost-saving strategy for performance optimization of the equipment before making and testing the final product [7]. Gas turbine models and simulators can be used for off-design performance prediction, performance deterioration and evaluation of emissions, turbine creep life usage and the engine control systems [8]. Mathematical modelling is considered as a general approach to system modelling and uses mathematical language to describe and predict the behaviour of a system.…”

“…2,3 Lots of research has been investigated using genetic algorithms or Fuzzy logic for power plant size greater than 1 megawatt for evaluating and predicting machine behavior during its operations. Studies were made for fuel importance, 3 for the diagnosis of faults arising in a turbofan engine, 4 preventive maintenance optimization, 5 and also for multivariable control system control systems. 6,7…”

“…An IFL controller is one of the methods which have been widely used by many researchers in different applications, such as a plate (Shirazi et al, 2011), an engine turbine (Bazazzadeh et al, 2011), and a robot arm (Mailah and Rahim, 2000). To implement IFL into the system, the IFL gain factor must be properly tuned.…”
