Gas Storage Facility Design Under Uncertainty

Abstract: In the screening and concept selection stages of gas storage projects, many estimates are required to value competing projects and development concepts. These estimates are important because they influence which projects are selected and which concept proceeds into detailed engineering. In most cases, there is uncertainty in all of the estimates. As a result, operators are faced with the complex problem of determining the optimal design. A systematic uncertainty analysis can help operators solve this problem an… Show more

“…We use these data, along with additional recent measurements in Venango, Lawrence, and Allegheny Counties, to estimate effective permeabilities of AOG wells. These measurements provide additional quantitative information on the ability of fluids to flow through these wells. The new effective permeability data can be used in modeling studies to evaluate the leakage potential of AOG wells in applications such as geologic storage of carbon dioxide, natural gas storage, and oil and gas development. …”

“…We use the iterative optimization with the Monte Carlo simulation method that decomposes the large‐scale stochastic optimization problem into several ordinary‐scale deterministic problems. These problems are optimized with a reasonable computational effort and aggregated to approximate the optimum design for large‐scale problem . The following workflow is implemented to optimize the CO 2 storage compliance problem: Specify the target storage site, the asset size, and the annual fresh CO 2 slug. Select the EOR‐storage design parameters, including gas injection rate, EOR‐storage duration, and the WAG ratio.…”

“…The concept of storage compliance is adopted from the natural gas storage literature . A natural gas storage site mitigates the seasonal gap between supply and demand.…”

“…A detailed description of reservoir behavior under these "tank" model assumptions is presented in Ettehad et al (2010). Each compartment is described by its own material balance, which is coupled to the material balance of the neighboring compartments through influx or efflux of gas across the common boundaries.…”
