During the research and development of multiphase flowmeters, errors are often used to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different devices and algorithms, whilst an in-depth uncertainty analysis is seldom carried out. However, limited information is sometimes revealed from the errors, especially when the test data are scant, and this makes an in-depth comparison of different algorithms impossible. In response to this problem, three combinations of sensing methods are implemented, which are the “capacitance and cross-correlation”, the “cross-correlation and differential pressure” and the “differential pressure and capacitance” respectively. The analytical expressions of the gas/liquid flowrate and the associated standard uncertainty have been derived, and Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to determine the desired probability density function. The results obtained through these two approaches are basically the same. Thereafter, the sources of uncertainty for each combination are traced and their respective variations with flowrates are analyzed. Further, the relationship between errors and uncertainty is studied, which demonstrates that the two uncertainty analysis approaches can be a powerful tool for error prediction. Finally, a novel multi-sensor fusion algorithm based on the uncertainty analysis is proposed. This algorithm can minimize the standard uncertainty over the whole flowrate range and thus reduces the measurement error.

An accurate two-phase flow rate measurement is essential in many applications and industries such as; oil/gas, chemical, pipeline transportation and nuclear industry. This paper presents the findings obtained from two-phase flow rate measurements using Venturi meters coupled with conductance probe sensors. The measurement system and presented methodology can be used to directly and continuously measure the mass flow rate of gas-liquid flows without any need for using a separator. Most of the available data in literature on mass flow rate using Venturis in gas-liquid two phase flows are limited/valid to a certain flow regime. However, the experimental data presented in this paper covered a wide range of flows (i.e. bubbly, slug and churn flows). Three Venturis with different diameter ratios, β = 0.40, β = 0.55 and β = 0.75 have been employed using an air-water vertical test section. The effect of the Venturi’s geometry on the flow behaviour was also evaluated. The average void fraction and void fraction time series have been measured along the test section by nine different conductance probe sensors covering the convergent, throat and divergent sections. In addition, the two-phase pressure drop across the Venturi was measured. Moreover, a new correlation for the gas-liquid slip ratio was proposed in this paper, which is necessary for calculating the two-phase mass flow rate. The proposed slip ratio correlation showed more accuracy than the ones available in literature. It was found that the correlation proposed by Chisholm to predict the two-phase mass flow rate in Venturis with a diameter ratio, β = 0.55, shows the best accuracy among others such as; Murdock, Lin, James and Zhang correlations.

Studying the flow characteristics of FK-5-1-12 in the pipeline during the release process is important for appropriate hydraulic calculations and fire extinguishing efficiency evaluation. This work proposes a well-documented dataset of flow results to investigate the flow state and characteristics. Through comparing the evaporation properties of FK-5-1-12 and those of other typical extinguishers, the flow state of FK-5-1-12 was assumed to be a single-phase flow, and hydraulic calculations were carried out using single-phase fluid formulas. The calculated values were compared with experimental data. The release tests of water (pure single-phase flow), Halon1301 (two-phase flow), and FK-5-1-12 were carried out under the same piping system, and the flow characteristics of the three media were compared to further verify the piping flow state. The experimental results show that the release process of FK-5-1-12 in the cylinder has a single-phase flow similar to water, but differs in density and expansion performance. However, FK-5-1-12 only conformed to singlephase flow in the more upstream sections of the pipeline, but presented obvious two-phase flow state in the main pipe and the more downstream sections. When the vaporization is the most serious, the density of the mixture is only 1/26 of that of liquid FK-5-1-12.
