Gas Exchange in Two Male Age Groups in Relation to Inspiratory Oxygen Fraction, Physical Exercise and Body Posture

Abstract: Two groups of male subjects, mean age 25 and 50 years, were studied at rest supine during air breathing, 15-11 and 100% Oa breathing, sitting at rest and during exercise up to maximal work load, and supine during a constant submaximal work load combined with D L~~ measurements. At rest supine, the mean and range of PaoI was 90.2 (79-97) in the young and 78.2 (68-88) mmHg in the middle-aged. PA-^^^ was 4.3 (-1-14) and 23.4 (15-33) mmHg, respectively. Corresponding SaOp values were 97.3 (95.7-99.0) and 94.5 (91.… Show more

“…Q up values in this study are consitent with published values (Rowell et al 1969;Minson et al 1998;Yamazaki et al 2000;Stöhr et al, 2011;Wilson and Crandall, 2011;Ogoh et al 2013). The same consistence with literature values are observed with the other data (notably VO 2 , VE, VA, VD phys , VA, AVOD values as well as VD phys /VT and VA/Q up ratios) of the present study (Cohn et al 1954;Farhi and Rahn 1955;Riley et al 1959;West and Dollery 1960;Froeb 1962;West 1962;Lenfant 1963;Ayres et al 1964;Damato et al 1966;Malmberg 1966;Mellemgaard 1966;Johnson and Miller 1968;Whipp and Wasserman 1969;Craig et al 1971;Backlund and Tammivaara-Hilty 1972;Bachofen et al1973;Wagner et al 1974;West et al 1974;Zwart et al 1976, Farhi and Rahn, 1955, Cohn et al, 1954, Riley et al, 1959, West and Dollery, 1960, Froeb, 1962, West, 1962, Lenfant, 1963, Ayres et al, 1964, Mellemgaard, 1966, Damato et al, 1966, Malmberg, 1966, Johnson and Miller, 1968, Whipp and Wasserman, 1969, Craig et al, 1971…”

“…The principles for arterial blood sampling and gas exchange studies during ambient air breathing, at rest and during exercise on an electrically braked bicycle ergometer, induction of hypoxia and hyperoxia at rest, right heart catheterization and laboratory methods have been described by the author elsewhere (5,26,27). For calculation of the veno-arterial shunting (Q,,/Q, %) in this material, however, the aGo, difference measured during hyperoxia was used.…”

“…The values for patients R 8 and 12 are not included in the group mean values presented in Table V. The gas exchange calculations were made according to the same principles as described earlier (5), except that they were modified in regard to the F I~~ and FICO2 concerned. The calculations were performed by computer.…”
