Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) Analysis of Indole Alkaloids Isolated from Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don Cultivated Conventionally and Derived from In vitro Cultures

Abstract: Catharanthus roseus (periwinkle) is a medicinal plant commonly known for its wide biological activity. In many countries different parts of this plant are used for the treatment of diabetes, hypertension and for menstrual regulation. Due to the ability of production of alkaloids, which can be applied in cancer therapy, is still extensively investigated. Two, the most valuable alkaloids (vincristine and vinblastine) are present in C. roseus in very low concentrations. Micropropagation is promising technique use… Show more

“…Excess methanol was evaporated in the rotary evaporator. The dry product was processed following the experimental procedures mentioned in the literature for the anti-settlement assay followed by phytochemical screening and GC-MS analysis (Muzquiz, 2000; Peters et al, 2004; Wesolowska, et al, 2016).…”

“…The temperature was maintained at 280 0 C for 40 min. The mass spectra were recorded at a standard source electron energy of 70 eV (Wesołowska, et al, 2016). Subsequently, dichloromethane extracts of soft coral Carijoa riisei and tunicate Botrylloides violaceus were filtered and prepared for the analysis following the method described previously, and Helium (99.999%) was used as carrier gas at a constant flow rate of ± 1 mL mn -1 .…”

“…The dichloromethane extract was washed with 100 mL of brine, the water content was removed using anhydrous sodium sulphate, and dichloromethane was evaporated and dried using a rotary evaporator under controlled conditions. The obtained semisolid plant extract was weighed and stored in the refrigerator at 4 ℃ [1,11].…”

“…Catharanthus roseus belongs to the apocynaceae family, which is also known as periwinkle or Madagascar periwinkle. The plant is considered to be a good source of pharmaceutically useful terpenoid indole alkaloids [1] and may be dated back to 2600 B.C.E. in Mesopotamia where it was grown as herbal medicines [2].…”

“…The main components of the essential oils isolated from L. angustifolia tissue are, among others, linalool, borneol, geraniol, and linalool acetate [20,21]. The composition of an essential oil depends mainly on the plant genotype, yet its composition may differ under the influence of developmental and environmental factors, i.e., sun exposure, plant age, seedling collection method or essential oil isolation method [22,23].…”
