Gas-chromatography and UV-spectroscopy of Hymenoptera venoms obtained by trivial centrifugation

Abstract: This paper summarises gas-chromatography (GC–MS) and preliminary UV-spectroscopy analyses data of fresh, unmodified venom of aculeate hymenopterans (ants, bees, wasps), mainly focusing on red imported fire ants. No solvents nor fractionation were used at any point, which is a novel approach to describing integral toxins cocktails as proposed by Fox et al. (2018a) [1] 10.1016/j.toxicon.2018.02.050 where these results are discussed in deeper details. Herein we focus on further characterising the obtained venom e… Show more

“…These insect alkaloids can be extracted efficiently by centrifugation of live ants or by solvent immersion of the live fire ants (23) followed by purification using silica-gel chromatography. Dosing and tracking the extracted solenopsin has been described as likely based on their absorbance peak near 232 nm (24). Crystals of piperine are extracted from the black pepper.…”

“…There are currently well defined protocols for separating and analysing fire ant venom alkaloids (Fox et al 2013;Yu et al 2014) as well as a number of published raw chromatograms available as chemical references (e.g. Fox et al 2018a, Fox et al 2018b) allowing for reproducible results.…”

“…cytolytic, hemolytic, allergenic, proin ammatory, insecticidal, antimicrobial, and nontoxic functions such as roles in chemical communication involving trail and sex pheromones, deterrents, and aggregators [5,6,9,10]. Reactions of human beings to the sting of red imported re ants vary from a burning sensation to severe anaphylactic shock and even death [11].…”
