Gas-chromatographic determination of phenols in aqueous samples after solid phase extraction

Abstract: 27 phenols including mono- di-, tri-, tetra- and pentachlorophenols, mono- and dinitrophenols, mono- and dinitrocresols and dimethylnitrophenols have been extracted from aqueous samples by solid phase extraction using both modified silica gel (C18) and XAD resin-ad-sorbents and determined by gas chromatography (GC) using capillary columns with specially desactivated weakly polar phases. If a 1 l sample of spiked water is used, a considerable breakthrough is observed with phenol itself, while all other phenols … Show more

“…The vials were capped and heated at 80 o C for 30 min to obtain the trimethylsilyl derivatives of phenols analyzed by GC-MS-SICP. The derivatization step was recommended by Mußmann, Levsen, and Radeck (1994) to avoid the broadening and tailing of chromatographic peaks otherwise characteristic of phenols due to their high polarity. The GC-MS-SICP method ensures high selectivity even though standards of phenolic derivatives are not available.…”

“…The analyte is selectively adsorbed on the surface of the sorbent which is then easily separated from the sample. SPE has many advantages over the traditional LLE, including reduced analysis time through automation [2-61, [43,44].…”
