Gardenia jasminoides Attenuates Allergic Rhinitis-Induced Inflammation by Inhibiting Periostin Production

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the nasal mucosa of the upper airways. Herein, we investigated the effects of extracts from Gardenia jasminoides (GJ), a traditional herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory properties, on AR-associated inflammatory responses that cause epithelial damage. We investigated the inhibitory effects of water- and ethanol-extracted GJ (GJW and GJE, respectively) in an ovalbumin-induced AR mouse model and in splenocytes, differentiated Th2 cells, and p… Show more

“…The extent of airway mucopolysaccharide positivity was scored by two independent assessors with a score ranging from 0 (none) to 3 (full of mucin) as described [ 26 , 69 , 70 , 71 ] ( Supplementary Materials ). Hematologic Stain from Abcam, Cambridge, UK (ab150665) was used to stain eosinophils [ 72 , 73 , 74 ].…”

“…Zhizi and Shuizhizi are rich in active chemicals, including iridoids (e.g., geniposide, geniposidic acid, shanzhiside, deacetylasperulosidic acid methyl ester, genipin 1-gentiobioside, genipin), pigments (e.g., crocin I, crocin II), organic acids (e.g., caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, protocatechuic acid), and flavonoids (e.g., isoquercitrin, rutin) ( Xiao et al., 2017 ; Ye et al., 2022b ; Zhang et al., 2024 ). The abundant chemical components in Zhizi exhibit various pharmacological effects such as hepatoprotection ( Fan et al., 2020 ), anti-inflammatory ( Zhou et al., 2019 ), anti-hyperglycemia ( Zhou et al., 2023 ), anti-depression ( Zou et al., 2021 ), and anti-allergy ( Pyun et al., 2021 ) activities. Zhizi is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heart fire, relieving restlessness, eliminating damp heat, and cooling blood detoxification ( Committee for the Pharmacopoeia of PR China, 2020 ).…”
